Washington Monument Tour

Just in case you haven't picked up on it yet, I love the Washington Monument. When I see the Washington Monument I see DC. We had tried on several occasions to go to the top of the monument but tickets were always sold out. So, I went online and got tickets for Sunday, December 21. It was a beautifully clear day!
Some fun facts about the Washington Monument.
  • It is 555 feet 5 1/8 inches tall
  • It is the tallest structure in the District
  • It is a freestanding structure, meaning it is not supported by wires or other support
  • Construction began in 1848 and completed in 1888
  • On top of the Monument is a quote, "Praise be to God!"
Waiting to go to the top.
Looking west. WWII Memorial, reflecting pool, Lincoln Memorial, Arlington (straight), Tidal Basin (left), Constitution Gardens (left)

Looking east. Capitol (straight). Smithsonian Castle (right).

Looking south at the Tidal Basin (Jefferson, FDR & MLK Memorial)
Looking north. White House & Ellipse (straight)

As you are going down the elevator stops at certain points so you can see some of the stones inside the Monument. You use to be able to walk up the Monument and I heard a rumor that this spring they will let you walk up it again, but I don't know if that is true or not. If so, that would be pretty amazing cause then you could see all the stones.

Outside Tuf noticed on the trees that some of the cherry blossoms were starting to bloom...in December, crazy! But beautiful photos!

Such a fun tour on a lovely spring like day in December.

Wow, just the fact that it took 40 years to build makes it special. I always wonder if the builders put anything unusual inside when I see buildings like this.
