Forts around DC

On Sunday, February 27 was another beautiful day on the east coast. Today we decided to explore some of the forts around the area. There are 68 major enclosed forts in the area. On this day we were able to see 5 of them.
We started at Fort Reno in Northwest DC. Fort Reno is the highest point (409 feet above see level) in all of the district and was involved in the only Civil War battle to take place in the district. The fort was built in 1861.

Next we went to Fort Stevens. Fort Stevens was also constructed n 1861 and was used during the Civil War. President Lincoln visited this fort two times.

The third fort of the day was Fort Slocum in northeast DC. There isn't much left or information on Fort Slocum.
The fourth fort was Fort Totten in northeast DC.

The final fort of the day is Fort Bunker Hill (not to be confused with the famous Bunker Hill in Boston). Like the others, Fort Bunker Hill was built in 1861 as part of the Civil War. Fort Bunker Hill is now an abandoned  area in northeast DC.

Fun day exploring DC's rich history that is off the beaten path!
